Dealing With Mistakes (06/05/2024)

Sometimes it is important to reiterate lessons that have been learned previously so as to remember them clearly and apply them carefully...

• Mistakes can sometimes be prevented by planning ahead and staying aware of what is going on within the present moment.

• For mistakes that are unavoidable, some can be made right by apologizing and doing something different. Do not complain. Find out what didn't work, why, and formulate the best possible course correction. Continue to revise plans and adapt as necessary.

• For mistakes that are both unavoidable and impossible to correct, forgive yourself and whomever else was involved. Learn and move on. Do not become depressed or bitter over it and seek revenge.

Self-reflection is not dwelling on past mistakes to the point of shame. It is gaining awareness of your strengths and weaknesses, using the former to transform the latter. However, refusing to try to correct a mistake once you are aware of making it is willful negligence of your own growth.

Self-responsibility means that I accept the consequences for the decisions that I make to an extent that is reasonable. In other words, I cannot control everything (nor should I try), but I can make sincere attempts to do my best. Likewise, help everyone to become their best selves by getting to know their strengths and weaknesses, and then gently (i.e.: without force or manipulation) encourage the expression of those strengths and improvement of those weaknesses.
