Energy Primer

This will be an attempt to digitize and update sections of the book Energy Primer, created by the now defunct Portola Institute in 1974. You can download a scan of the original book at Internet Archive.

To quote the abstract on the title page:
The Energy Primer is a comprehensive, fairly technical book about renewable forms of energy - solar, water, wind, and biofuels. The biofuels section covers biomass energy, agriculture, aquaculture, alcohol, methane, and wood. The focus is on small-scale systems which can be applied to the needs of the individual, small group, or community. More than 1/4 of the book is devoted to reviews of books and hardware sources. Hundreds of illustrations and a dozen original articles are used to describe the workings of solar water heaters, space heaters and dryers, waterwheels, windmills, wind generators, wood burning heaters, alcohol stills, and methane digesters. The final section of the book focuses on the need for energy conservation and some of the problems and potentials of integrated energy systems.
It is very practical. While a bit dated in some spots, it can still serve as a useful "launch pad" for further research into energy systems. I have added content lists to make it easier to navigate, and wherever possible, I also tried to link to the references that are mentioned throughout. However, I have left out a good chunk of the material within some of the review sections, with the exception of the recommended books. In general, the formatting is hard to capture because some pages are crammed with information and little details, so the layout here is much more linear. Extra notes by me will be in pink boxes.
